The dynamic church that is today First Baptist rose from humble beginnings.  In the early part of World War II many churches west of present day Richmond Hill were disbanded when the government purchased a large portion of Bryan County for military training purposes.  This area later became Fort Stewart.

Many people from these churches resettled in the Richmond Hill area including most of the members of Bragg Baptist Church, which was located just a few miles west of the current First Baptist site.  These people brought with them rich religious beliefs and soon felt a need to meet and worship together.  Prayer meetings were held in homes, the school, and the courthouse.

A new Baptist church originated in a prayer meeting in March of 1941 at the home of Mr. and Mrs E. D. Mitchum.  Home-type meetings grew and because of the need for more space they bagan to meet in the Richmond Hill School as well as the Richmond Hill Courthouse.  In February of 1942 the Richmond Hill Baptist Church was formally organized and called Reverend Arthur Harrison as its first pastor.  A local businessman, Bennie Warshaw, donated the first piece of property on Highway 144 in the Blueberry subdivision.

The first church building was completed on this property in March of 1946, and a formal dedication was held on March 31, 1946.  Through the years additional buildings were added and the name was changed to First Baptist Church Richmond Hill to reflect the fact that this church was the first Baptist church incorporated within the growing community of  Richmond Hill.  First Baptist grew tremendously during the 1980's and purchased additional land.

In 1989 the church began construction of a new worship center, holding the first service on December 16, 1990.  Multiple Sunday worship services were begun in 1994 and the worship center was expanded in 2000.  In 2004 an education building was added, in 2006 the Family Life Center and gymnasium were completed and in 2010 the old 1946 building was renovated to serve as the Student Center.

Today, First Baptist Church continues to grow but one thing remains constant; First Baptist Church Richmond Hill is committed to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and resting on the fact that He is faithful and true.  If you want to experience all that God has for you and His wonderful peace and joy, we invite you to join us.  We'd love to meet you!
